00:00.00 Alex And we are back with archeo animals. We're talking about our favorite and least favorite animal bones to celebrate 50 episodes of this podcast which is still completely wild to me but hey normally this would be case study time. But. That time of the episode is always so special and amazing and wonderful. We're instead going to talk about our top 5 animal bones. 00:24.76 S_ Granarius And I guess in a way like this or episode has been a case study of us. 00:30.61 Alex Just being bad at Zoo archeology think just not being the people who should be hosting this podcast. 00:41.46 S_ Granarius I am sure most people in our field have their least favorite animal bones and actually if Ed if it there's anyone out there listening please tell us what your favorite and least favorite animal bones are get give us your hot takes. 00:57.45 Alex Yes, definitely. 01:01.54 S_ Granarius Okay, there was a few hot takes right there I think her bastard would just say that her least favorite bones are. 01:18.70 S_ Granarius No, she said she was going to say dog bones but actually it's good because if if they're bones They can't bother her. 01:30.11 Alex That's fair. 01:33.50 S_ Granarius Sorry, she's just grumpy at her dog sister. She tends to be but any who for our favorite dog ah dog person. 01:48.90 S_ Granarius For our favorite animal bones. Um, so we're now on to number six five I can count sorry I got lost in the intricacy of the made up personas I've made for my domestic animals. 01:53.20 Alex 5 02:07.60 S_ Granarius Um, so by a number 5 favorite animal bone of metapodials again. Any species mammalian ops but any species is fine and they tend to be you know like. 02:26.87 S_ Granarius Very easily recognizable, especially when it comes to undululates so like sort of cattle and horse in particular sort of like again, you can't miss it I like how dense they are so they preserve quite well. The distal end. Is my particular favorite with ah with my professional description of of it as the Rollie bits. Um, so I just. 02:47.96 Alex Yes, they are. 02:57.43 S_ Granarius Like mettapodials and again usually like you can tell if it's a mettacarpal or a metasil easily enough again tends to be easier with cattle sheep deer and horse. But if you got enough of it. It's It's a fairly both easy Aesthetically pleasing. Bone to work with. 03:18.60 Alex Yeah I agree and I do it I do like the the rolly bits and it's exactly how I think about them too. 03:27.93 S_ Granarius Well because I guess it's all about sort of the articulation. They're meant to slot in so they yeah that they they they roll. 03:32.21 Alex Listen at this Podcast. We're all about precision when it comes to our terminology I will admit I did not really put any chunky toes in this and I realized that right before we start recording and for that I Apologize. I'm sorry to let all my fans down. 03:52.88 S_ Granarius Let the stingt lack of chonky bits. 03:56.21 Alex Yeah, so and in a way my selection for my number 5 is actually a bit opposite of chunky toes because it's just it's a skull and it's a you know you might want to cover Bastard's ears it's a cat skull because I know. 04:11.57 S_ Granarius Hello. 04:15.81 Alex But they're just they are so Cute. They're so tiny and I don't know it's just it's one of those skulls that I feel like really captures how small the animal is which is a very silly thing to say is obviously you look at the skull and you kind of get an idea of how big the animal is. Just something about the catsus are just so like characteristic of what cats are like in in flesh. Yeah because you see like how dainty like the the. 04:41.50 S_ Granarius What so like dainty but dead deadly. 04:49.69 Alex The top part of their skull is and everything but then you see the little Tifs and you're like oh they can get me and you know it's just the very cute I like them a lot. 05:02.43 S_ Granarius Ah I'd like I'd like you to know that basset us turneder back on the podcast. 05:09.42 Alex Yeah I mean meanwhile my cat violet ah hates other cats. So she ah loves cat skulls I think. 05:18.50 S_ Granarius But ah, she's still purring so you know in too much trouble. But then again, she's she spends her life purring so things. Um, and for number four I have a skull of my own. Well not not my own personal. It's. 05:19.85 Alex Okay, good. 05:34.83 S_ Granarius Ah, um, it's the it's badger s school specifically. So the European Badger Meli Meli Um, and now aside from it being Well I guess not quite like the. 05:44.80 Alex Mm I get that? yeah. 05:53.97 S_ Granarius It is quite a bit chankiier and the teeth are a fair bit chounky and you think like oh yeah, that would hurt. Um, but my favorite part of the Badger skull specifically is the sagital crest in male badgers. 06:08.93 Alex Um, yes. 06:09.92 S_ Granarius Because now. Um for reference for those who are not aware so you tend to see that in carnivals more. So like you tend to have a sagal crest So It's it's it's in the word. It's a little crest that's at the top of the skull and that tends to be more pronounced in males as opposed to females. And now that goes to some extreme in European Badger skulls where like if you get if you look up a photo of like a male badger skull like they look like they have more hawks. 06:39.14 Alex They do? Yeah, they do. That's actually really cute. 06:41.56 S_ Granarius And I love it. 06:47.34 S_ Granarius Have you ever thought how like many like small fragments of sadgeal Crests may have been mistaken for scapula. 06:53.10 Alex No now you've ruined it now. It's not fun anymore. It's not good. That's given me anxiety. 06:57.85 S_ Granarius Ah. 07:03.30 S_ Granarius And anyway work yours. 07:04.98 Alex I guess well to to counteract that I'm going to talk about my number 4 which is a bone that's probably a bit more difficult to identify as anything else and it's the seal tibia now we already kind of talked about tibia with your. Pick Simona in the first half of this show but I do like the sealtivia because as I said before seal bones have a very distinctive curviness to them but also because they are marine um mammals the bones themselves have a very like. Porous type of texture to um which is also very identifiable right away. But I also find very interesting to look at and you know the the seal tibia is a really interesting contrast between that kind of curiness as well as that. General Tibia like triangular look. It's ah it's a land of contrasts the seal tibia. 08:11.30 S_ Granarius Yes. 08:12.94 Alex Thank you. 08:18.80 S_ Granarius Okay, so I guess we're in the top 3 now. Okay so we have ah okay number 3 for me again. Very very broad apologies but carnivore teeth because that in general I love. 08:19.85 Alex Oh yeah, wow. 08:35.97 S_ Granarius All teeth. Of course it's because I find them aesthetically pleasing. They're quite dense. They they you know they preserve very well. They're fairly easy to identify because you can do if you get more like a few teeth and a mandible because you can age the animal you can do a lot of fun stuff with it. Um, there can be some called Pathology. But my favorite of all are carnivore teeth for no other reason other than than put their pointy. So I like a nice big like dog canine. Um, my favorite ones will have to however be carnasials. 09:02.39 Alex Yeah I get that. 09:09.00 Alex The. 09:15.36 S_ Granarius Which are the teeth I guess depending on whether they're modibular or mexillary. It's either the fourth premolar or the first molar. So I think it's the lower first molar and the upper fourth premolar and it just because there's just so distinctive. 09:22.33 Alex E. 09:32.84 S_ Granarius And they have all these like pointy cusps and I think I particularly like the cat one because again, it's so distinctive. It's just got the 2 is like v shaped with the 2 cusps and yeah, come miss that one I mean bastard can because she doesn't have any of them left but you didn you didn't hear that. 09:39.45 Alex Yeah. 09:48.79 Alex Oh you know like looking I'm looking at. Um so again, if you're if you're not um, follow me on social media I've got loads of animal bone tattoos. But in particular um I have 2 09:51.63 S_ Granarius You. 10:02.87 Alex A mandable tattoos one of a lower mandible of a cat and 1 of a lower mandible the dog and you can see those carnassials really? well they are very distinctive and they are. They're like little I always thinkk of them as waves little wave shapes I don't know. 10:18.97 S_ Granarius Yeah, and I guess that that the seal teeth would be quite cool as well. Because course they theyre carnivore like teeth because they're specifically adapt to adapted for a fish diet so they're like bolky cusps so they're all like just like a little wavy Zigzag I like them. 10:22.50 Alex Ah, cool. 10:32.23 Alex Um I. 10:36.11 Alex Yeah, that seals are the dogs of the sea and I've definitely seen a couple times people who have mistaken seal Mandibles for potentially like canine like bull for dog which is very easy to do so. 10:38.40 S_ Granarius Ah forgot lets through teeth. 10:56.12 Alex Definitely time pretty similar. 10:57.90 S_ Granarius And again unless you work in a coastal area like your mind isn't going to go to seal you find something like it like in in the the bed center of the country be like oh yes seal if it is so Miracle cool. 11:01.67 Alex For sure. Yeah. 11:13.81 Alex Yeah, and I guess I'm going to kind of go chaunky but not completely chaunky toes. Unfortunately, again? Sorry but my number 3 again. How to think about what number that was. Is the cow humorous because it is very chunky and distinctively so and like I said I love I kind of love a ah humorous again the curiness of you know the the distalins very. Aesthetically pleasing but there's something about a cow humorous. That's just so chunky and stubby and fat that I love and again, very distinctive chunky arms. Hashtag. 11:52.82 S_ Granarius To cut hashtag chunky Arms Virgin arms chi chunky front leg. But yeah. 12:02.65 Alex Yes, they not really arms is. 12:07.33 S_ Granarius And I guess it kind as a rolly bit of its own because of how it goes where it goes to articulate onto the the owner and Radius. So. 12:13.48 Alex Yeah, they're just they're cool. They're they're just big and I feel like if you could really use them as a weapon if need be just saying. 12:21.16 S_ Granarius What can the horse 1 be quite chaunky as well because I think the distill end is even like chonia all the way across like the the Rory bit. 12:29.16 Alex Yeah, true I Really thought about that I guess maybe I just come across Cow he or I a bit more in like domestic context. But. 12:41.92 S_ Granarius For number number 2 I guess accounts eda I'm going for antler again. Probably not the if you get a small fragment probably not the easiest to identify. 12:48.40 Alex It does I think it does. 13:00.45 S_ Granarius Species I mean you can roughly like judge you by size and if you forget about the fallow de that you don't have to see as much aside from specific time periods anyway, be like we can identify it. Um, but again I personally like it because I think Angela looks really cool. You also tend to see a lot of butchery and lot of working on Antler. So. It's always very exciting and also implies not necessarily hunting but at least um, that people are utilizing wild fauna that doesn't necessarily mean that they've hunted the animal because for all. 13:33.35 Alex Yeah. 13:37.72 S_ Granarius You know they might have just collected shed antler and then law the case like that that is indeed the case but it's still pretty cool because it's something that ah deviates from your usual sort of common domestic kids and you go go you go you sheeving your character or and red there. That's cool. 13:55.95 Alex Yeah I feel like for the most part if you find antler.. There's usually something somewhat interesting going on Obviously Antler sheds exists and things like that. But I mean even you know if you're not talking about ritual or anything plenty of people were able to use antler to work it into tools and things like that. So I feel like in particular if you're looking at it in a context that has human activity. There's definitely something interesting going on. 14:24.34 S_ Granarius Although the downside of that that I find personally is wastage because some so some of the antler that gets sawn and discarded. You could have made so many beautiful things with that and you just chucked it in a pit. Just unbelievable. 14:27.38 Alex In. 14:38.83 Alex I can't wait until the time travel exists and the first thing you do is go back in time and start berating people the past for not utilizing all of the antler. Everyone else doing inc. 14:50.63 S_ Granarius Tell him off for being wasteful. 14:57.10 Alex Citing incredible things and where's Simona go and you're just waggling your finger at some people have no idea what you're talking about. 15:01.31 S_ Granarius Like you throwing all these things she could have used. We learnt it from you. 15:12.99 Alex Ah, oh my god oh yes, my my number 2 pick isn't necessarily as interesting and again it may be surprising for how I I feel about a lot of other birdbone. 15:13.80 S_ Granarius So take. 15:27.29 Alex But I chose the bird tibio tarsus which I guess is like the opposite of your choice from earlier in that Well not really the opposite. It's similar in that it's another kind of bone That's a combination of you know, ah bones that would normally be separate in other animals. 15:44.80 S_ Granarius Yeah I guess it it's one up I Guess from the one I've mentioned the Pobo up. 15:47.20 Alex But the tibi top. Yeah yeah, that is true. Yeah, but I just again, it's the Rollie bits. It's the bit. The end is like a little like perfect. It looks like the bottom of like a a scroll. 16:00.32 S_ Granarius I does. 16:03.45 Alex Which I just I think that's so delightful and it's again, it's so distinct and I mean again I think I've told this star in the podcast but 1 of like most proud moments in my ph d was when I was given a bone that was like oh this is a human bone we found from sight I like looked at it within like. 30 seconds I was like that's a bird because it was a to be tarsis and to be fair, it was a very big 1 turn out to be crane. It's like a foot long and it wasn't a complete tvo tarsis. So I can understand why you know you weren't trained in zoo archeology thinking. Oh that's a human bos. It's so big but it was just like It's so cool and maybe very happy to be able to say that. 16:49.66 S_ Granarius Okay, shall we get get our drum rolls in for a number 1 16:54.39 Alex Yeah, will that be extremely annoying to have on audio. 16:59.15 S_ Granarius Say I'm trying to drum roll on Bas The but again, it's not carrying. She's just purring you can. The drumroll can be her pairing there. You go and the number. 17:15.64 Alex A. 17:17.92 S_ Granarius Um, is for both of us here straggle us who is it the book could but of but that's where the clap it all the applause starts there. You go like can. 17:20.40 Alex Yes, elegance surprise surprise yeah, we should we wait like 5 minutes for the applause over our listeners to die down. 17:36.00 S_ Granarius Yeah, yeah, I'll do that. Thank you? Thank you. 17:37.91 Alex Assume they're giving us standing Ovations so give you like we'll give you a couple seconds to you know, sit back down you know. Thank you so much we have but we don't have much time we got to like keep going with the podcast sorry guys. But thank you? Thank you? Thank you? We appreciate it. Thank you? No no, please don't start another. Round of applause. It's fine. Please please sit down. Please we need to finish this episode. Okay I think we're sorted yes, although too fair I said Australia the list of any species but you wrote a especially. A specific species. 18:14.75 S_ Granarius Yes, especially the bobbyday. So um, mostly cattle and sheep because they look like little toy cars. 18:20.94 Alex And that's our favorite. We just talk about all time they're little toy cars. That's so adorable. 18:29.43 S_ Granarius And again, you know that they're pretty, um, they're very dense so they preserve very well usually intact. Um, while you don't necessarily see that so in the everyday archeological record from an an ethnographic point of view. There's a lot of. Very interesting sort of customs and Fa are associated with a stragggoli whether you have some that its of cultures are kept as talismans or some are used for divination purposes. Um, where ah and I think like sometimes different species are used to predict. 18:48.50 Alex M. 19:04.81 S_ Granarius The future like of something whether it's like a sort of people or the chieftain or like and they'll use a different set of a straggler from a different species and um and I think like I used to have and ah. 19:13.86 Alex Yeah, yeah. 19:24.90 S_ Granarius Much knowledge in my book but very good English just then um, but yes, now they are like a archeologically from an Id point of view aesthetic point of view a ethnographic point of View. Just. Very aesthetically pleasing and fascinating. 19:44.12 Alex Yeah I think that hits all of the the kind of key points that we've made in terms of our favorite ah bones slightlyly pleasing easy I id so makes my our lives easier and just interesting and ah. A broader sense and I think that's a great way to wrap up our fiftieth episode celebration and thanks to everyone who's been listening this long who may have just joined us and are really confused about all the weird jokes that we've made this entire episode go back and you can listen to more and you can. 20:01.27 S_ Granarius So. 20:15.43 Alex Find all of our episodes either on the archaeology podcast network website.
