00:03.63 S_ Granarius Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of archae animalsals the podcast all about zoo archaeology and now for this particular episode. Um, we were going to celebrate the fact that we've hit 50 episodes except that that was last month 00:21.58 Alex I Mean we never said we were good at counting or maths. 00:25.87 S_ Granarius Or are introducing ourselves by the way M Simmona Falanga and and and and with me. 00:32.35 Alex And yes, it would also me Alex Fitzpatrick you know we're keeping it fresh and funky by changing up our intro at eso 51 yeah 00:43.90 S_ Granarius Just the keeping you on your toes. Um, but yeah, so um, we were going to celebrate our 50 episodes. Um with some a bit of a lighthearted one. Um, where I guess we'll offer some of our hottest takes. 01:05.87 S_ Granarius No, no, especially not you. 01:06.42 Alex Which we've never done before to be fair. Ah no I I've never given a take in my life to be honest. 01:15.40 S_ Granarius But it's been zero days since the last take was given. 01:20.93 Alex Oh yeah, probably. But yeah, we will be giving our hot takes ah which again we've never done before we've never been opinionated on this podcast but we'll be listing our top 10 animal bones which obviously. Sounds a lot easier than it actually was in retrospect. 01:41.98 S_ Granarius Yeah, but we'll also give out some of our least favourite animal bones. 01:47.27 Alex Which we've never talked about on this show either. So people will be very surprised. 01:51.53 S_ Granarius Well I guess in this particular episode. We'll be slightly more specific than like I hated this entire order of animals For particular reason. 02:01.50 Alex I mean you know speak for yourself to be honest, but yeah, so I guess we'll we'll start off by talking about. So You know we did our our top 10 lists the way that I think most people do top 10 lists. So we'll start off from the bottom of our 10 and we'll work our way up to number one so you know we'll let that anticipation build and whatnot and then during our our next segment we'll we'll go a bit down the other road and talk about our our top.. That's not really top. 3 is it if it's our worst animal Bones Bottom Bottom Just the worst they're the worst animal Bones. We don't need a number um because they're just sitting in the bottom of the pile. Anyway. 02:41.80 S_ Granarius Bottom 3 02:54.78 S_ Granarius Yeah, and I guess that in part 3 we'll review our 5 top animal bolds. Ah. 03:00.17 Alex Very exciting stuff very hard hitting Journalism going on here. 03:06.61 S_ Granarius I'm trying to do a drum roll where you see him I'm doing a slight ah drum roll on on bast it and it's it that the sounds not quite carrying as it should. 03:13.63 Alex She must be she needs to be thicker or more hollow I don't know I don't know how sound works. 03:19.49 S_ Granarius Then but she but she's spurring So she's happy enough. 03:27.63 Alex Ah, okay I guess we should get started then. 03:30.55 S_ Granarius Okay, so for number 10 my personal pick and this was hard like Anita stress like it was harder than I thought it would be for like just our top 10 animal bones. But you actually actually. Sit down and think about us say but do I like this bone more than that bone they try. Oh I think I'll go for this bone? Oh no Alex already put it down of fight. Um, but I guess for my 10 number 10 I would go for Tibius. No. Particular species just the tibia because personally because a lot of animal bones are usually when they come to us couple thousand years later they tend to be a little bit more on the fragmented side and you tend to sometimes not have only have one of the epiphacs or no epi epiphasis at all. Or even worse still is juvenile and is completely unfused. However, with our beloved reliable tibia and its nice triangular shape. It stands out beautifully. So even if you get like ah a thing there's like an inch long. You're like oh yet, not that's a tibia I mean what off I do not know. 04:27.41 Alex In. 04:39.45 S_ Granarius But that's a Tibia. 04:42.40 Alex It's it's solid. It's stable. It's dependable I mean what more can you want from the tibia I mean to be completely honest I Do agree in that. What. 04:48.75 S_ Granarius How not not heart enough that the pun. The the pun you the terrible pun you missed with to be honest. 05:02.80 Alex Oh gosh we gotta start the upset over there. 05:05.56 archpodnet I No that was actually amazing. That was so good somewhere you get a you get an honorary dash patch from me. 05:16.69 S_ Granarius That's all I ever wanted. 05:17.72 archpodnet And well done. 05:17.78 Alex I Hate this podcast I hate this so much we obviously started really anyway getting it back to very important stuff but I do agree because when it comes to Id and. Bones Obviously um, you know there's some stuff that are very easy to see skulls and whatnot you know, just like I know what that is but if it come when it comes to the long bones I think the tiia is probably the most. Um. Characteristic even in a fragmented form because like you said that Triangle bit is just what Chef's kiss. Great design. Love to see it. 06:08.55 Alex It's just good. It's just good stuff. 06:12.10 S_ Granarius Adna yeah, you're just to keep it on the super serious side. What what is your number 10 06:18.11 Alex Listen I don't know if we've talked about this on the show. So part of me was like we need to talk about it because it's It's a very serious and important conversation that needs to be had and needs to be done delicately with the kind of professionalism and sensitivity that people need. For these kind of topics and on the other hand I do actually enjoy them in a way that is ah similar to a lover of art looking at and ah a modern artist and it's called the baculum folks now. The baculum. Is a very interesting bone We as humans do not have them and um, I'm trying to figure out the best way to phrase this. But um, it's the penis bone. It's the bone that supports the penis. 07:13.32 S_ Granarius Yeah, don't think there's many other ways she can put it. 07:14.67 Alex So yeah I guess not um, like I said humans do not have 1 but many mammals do and you know I have seen my fair share of them and they're. 07:32.80 Alex Removing the the uses of the the bone itself what it's intended to do and the kind of jokes that a juven a more juvenile person may make about them. They're very, they are actually kind of interesting looking. So obviously they are. Very different depending on what animal you're dealing with and as someone who's seen Bacula Bacula from boxes to seals boy does that diversity really get reflected in in that bone. 08:08.48 S_ Granarius But think what what sort of brings them all together is that much like ah of Ti a friend you can't miss him. 08:08.48 Alex My gosh. 08:14.77 Alex You can't no pretty easy. 08:18.67 S_ Granarius Also super super rare. So. 08:22.89 Alex Yeah, So it's kind of exciting to to come across them. Ah so yeah, sometimes bit more difficult in that case to identify them to species because you know they they can be kind of rare and I feel like a lot of reference collections. Don't always have them., But some people like me who are you know, very thorough in our collecting do have say a couple of different dog breed ones that someone sent them. So if I want anyone ever needs a reference Just let me know. Moving on. 09:00.18 archpodnet What what would you put? What would you put on the packaging like you know if you're posting it and you have to declare what it's in it. 09:00.48 S_ Granarius Yeah, well welcome context. Ah Annex for all your your vacuum reference needs. 09:06.59 Alex I Have no idea what they put but it boy did they get to my house. 09:10.93 archpodnet Who I would put Bacula and just herbakcuum I wouldn't I wouldn't elaborate. 09:16.68 Alex Well no one else would probably know what it is I mean you know I've talked about baculum to people in archeology who aren't zoo archaeologists and they've just never known and it's it's kind of fun to talk about it like that because in the back of my head I'm just like I'm talking about a penis bone. 09:34.53 archpodnet And as always the most mature podcast in the archeology Podcast network. 09:38.41 Alex I Have a Ph D It's fine. 09:45.51 S_ Granarius Right for number 9 Um, um for myself I have gone for bousks for no particular reason other than they look pretty. 09:57.87 Alex They are very pretty and they've got very distinctive like rectangular base that I will kind of appreciate if that's very strange to say it. But. 10:12.57 S_ Granarius Yeah I guess it is also I correct me if I'm wrong, but um, the Mayo Tusks you don't tend there doesn't tend to be a root because they continuously grow throughout their lifetime. 10:23.51 Alex Yeah, which is very cool. Um, but now they're very pretty and obviously they're used often in decorative and ornamental type of artifacts and sometimes in ritual type things so you know Mark that down on your bingo for this podcast. But. They're very cool I didn't even think about those and now I kind of wish I put them on one of my lists. But yeah I guess I will go at my number 9 which is ah ah just a simple rapid femur I there's a a bit of a theme in my. List and obviously for listeners at home. We encourage you to maybe pull up Google images and look these up or I don't know maybe we'll figure out a way to kind of just collect a lot of these images and put them in ah on Twitter maybe and but yeah. Robert Femur is this very nice and kind of like curvy looking type of bone. It always reminds me of like a claw in some way but you'll you'll notice this in my list. The kind of bones I like are very interesting looking and curvy and has nothing to do with like actual. Use is more of a aesthetic judgment. 11:41.89 S_ Granarius It's like we've both gone for aesthetic in this ah number 9 um, um, for 8 um again I guess much like the tibia is a not a bone that I particularly like per se. But it's just um, one that tends to aid identification so to speak and my random choice is ah, an amphibian ilium. 12:05.64 Alex But. 12:13.23 Alex Yeah I actually never have seen what if Amphibian ilium really looked to like cause I don't really work with amphibians. So um, I'm glad you put that. 12:21.59 S_ Granarius Um, well it just looks like course it Hasle of the articulation. They'll go into the fema and then it's almost like a almost like a rib like thing that sticks out of it. That's my professional description of it and again because amphibians. 12:29.39 Alex In. 12:37.16 S_ Granarius Ah, notoriously annoying to Id to species unless of course you're very experienced or like you're specialize in Amphibians. A lot stuff tend to go down as like either frog or toad because with some bones you just can't Tell. Um. The ilium though if you have a complete enough is one of the ones that tends to be a little bit easier to ascertain whether it's frog or toad. So. It just gives you a bit of a win with Amphibians. It's a win. 13:09.16 Alex Ah, so so the theme of our lists are either aesthetically pleasing or makes our lives way easier. That's fair I think. 13:16.75 S_ Granarius You get a nice complete Alien you like oh yeah, know this one That's a frog I'm so smart. 13:26.91 Alex Ah, ah, that's all we want. We just want that validation really and speaking of validation I guess this is more to validate my my ph d work but my number 8 is the great ack humorous which. I mean bird humor are actually as much as I like to complain about bird bonenes for being small and fragile and annoying the humorists I find various staically pleasing. They're very bulbous and kind of round and just very interesting looking and ah the great ock in particular. Great ock bones are very distinctive in that they're they're very curvy and I think a lot of the kind of like puffin type of that family of bird have very similar bones and they looked up to the point where I think they curve almost like an s shape which is extremely fascinating to look at. But obviously i've. Got a great affection for the great aux since working with a lot of their bones during my ph d I even have ah for those of you who don't fall in social media I have a great oc tattoo because they're very cute if not extremely depressing to think about and. Which is like me I am also very cute but extremely depressing to think about so you know a lot of kindred spirits. Basically so I felt like I had to put them on this list for sure. 14:51.72 S_ Granarius Okay I mean for but I can't comment to that. Um, as more focusing on trying to remember how to count my number 5 and. 15:04.27 Alex I was struggling struggling with that too. Don't worry. 15:11.26 S_ Granarius Um, my number 7 is also a bird bone I guess would be like avian in general there a bone that I particularly like burin doesn't particularly the silly age you with identification I guess though it does just burden um, any who. 15:17.77 Alex Um. 15:28.34 S_ Granarius Ah, it's the bird tarsel mettatasis which sounds like a bit of a mouthful but I guess you'll be the equivalent of our metaphortadials and the reason I like it is I will a particular like the this little end of it I find it aesthetically pleasing for some reason it just looks like it's got tons of little prongs. 15:46.50 Alex Mm Yeah, get what you mean it. It is. There's a lot of bird Bonenes that are really aesthetically pleasing even if they are very annoying. 15:47.59 S_ Granarius Yeah, the base. 15:54.81 S_ Granarius Yeah I mean like um I guess like if you get a complete tarsum at thetasus like you can identify it to species. But I think with birds we have such a wide variety of species many of which are wild is it unless you've got axis. 16:07.84 Alex Is. 16:12.28 S_ Granarius Sort of a museum that has an extensive reference collection. You're just just nay. Ah, um, better than that. Um, not really like it and of course depending on the bird species. You can get a spur. 16:19.55 Alex So yeah, oh. 16:31.31 S_ Granarius The side of it so you get that in roosters you get sort of little spur of the side of it and that's it says sometimes it's like really chunky and he just. 16:32.51 Alex Yeah. Is very exciting to to be honest, when you get a spur. But yeah I will go to my number where we 7 and a dog calcanus which is just. 16:48.20 S_ Granarius Gift. 16:57.37 Alex It makes me laugh because it looks like a little shoe and like I guess that's helpful in terms of kind of figuring out spatially where the calcanus is like not necessarily. It's not the foot bone per say but it's in that area. 17:12.25 S_ Granarius In the general region I guess I relate the canid one in general because the wolf is very to be fair I wouldn't be able to tell the 2 apart aside from that. 1 ne's really big but then certain dogs are really big. So. 17:15.68 Alex Yeah, and they look like little shoes and I think that's fun. 17:21.14 Alex Yeah, your head's a bit. Yeah, yeah, that's always a pain. 17:31.67 S_ Granarius But um, they but we have somehow made it to number 6 I shall keep this brief. Um, again, any species and yet no particular tax on um scapulas. 17:49.45 Alex Just get cook. 17:51.14 S_ Granarius And now like from it well from an id point of view. They tend to be a pain because if you get like a small fragment ah of it because also because of course that the scapula itself it is quite thin so he does fragment a fair bit and then you get like a scapula that's smashed into like 56 bits and. 18:01.87 Alex A. 18:10.12 S_ Granarius And you just like question why you're doing this but um, what I do like scapulous fall is any modification that might have taken place on the bone. So sometimes you can find perforations of it So where people would have hung them up to say like smoke them or salt them ah or sort of. 18:21.44 Alex Um, in. 18:29.37 S_ Granarius Burning as you find a lot of sort of ah pyromancy practices certain That's what does the Scapulara for me. 18:40.14 Alex Know that they are very cool. But yeah, if they're fragmented I am just going to start putting down unidentfiable anyway, my final one for this bit at least ah number 6 our dear frontlets which is kind of cheating and thinks it's not really a bone per se. It's a part of the skull kind of the the frontal area of this cranium plus the bit where the antlers usually come from and again it's more of an aesthetic thing. Ah, we talked about it in a previous episode. We talked about star car and their fabulous ah deer frontlines that they have from that site I've had deer frontlines from my site from my ph d. They're just extremely cool and there's so much interesting things that could have been used for with regards to ritual or. Costuming and things like that they're just they're cool. It's a cool cool look and no, no wonder why they're still very popular as hunting trophies to this day. But yeah I think we sped through that pretty good. 19:39.89 S_ Granarius Yeah. 19:46.45 Alex And I think we can take a break and then we can get into the real juicy stuff which is the worst bones on the planet. So yeah, see you later.
